Ben and Anushka

To begin our interview, first some basics: What country where you were born and where else have you lived?
Anuschka: I was born Hamburg, Germany, but also lived in India at a young age (around 5-7), and in England I attended a posh public boarding school. I have also lived in other various cities across Germany.
Ben: I too am born in Germany, in a place called Darmstadt (close to Frankfurt). I also lived in Costa Rica and Bolivia - Costa Rica as exchange student, and in Bolivia I worked for civil service, helping Bolivian kids with difficulties when applying and preparing for exchanges abroad.

So what are your majors at Jacobs?
A: Psychology- I studied business in Berlin for half a year but that didn’t really work out, so I spontaneously chose psychology instead but luckily now I’m very happy with my decision.
B: ISS - Integrated social sciences. I made this decision as I found the whole 4 areas in one very interesting, but now its regretted as 2 out of 4 are in my opinion a waste of time. Basically the areas of media and communications sciences are uninteresting.

Describe a few personal traits or hobbies that you feel best describe your roommate:
A: Very Nocturnal, but meet sometimes, but there is overlap in the morning.
Her room is always messier than Ben's, yet always walks around barefoot, as she doesn’t like shoes.
Not at all hardworking, the opposite of Ben, but the number of hours invested verses grades, she wins.
Has over 1000 euros on the campus card for aramark meals.
B: Ben cleans the bathroom (he is planning to do it tonight, because his sister is coming round)
Hates fruit flies, and battles them all day; they are the devil and must be destroyed.
Very hardworking, very disciplined

Which universities you would have chosen instead of Jacobs, and why did you settle on Jacobs in the end?
B: University of Mannheim or Bradford in England, but Jacobs won as they said yes before the applications began for Mannheim, and Bradford was studying a major in peace and conflict studies which I was not so appealed towards.
A: I could have stayed in Berlin, but I hated writing papers in German, as I had serious issues writing in German. Jacobs was also far better because it was a nice campus university.

First things you do when you wake up:
Sometimes we wake up in the same room, as we have 3 beds spread throughout the apartment; one of the beds is a slightly bigger one. Ben showers first because he is the early bird, waking up about 3-4 hours earlier, sometimes up to 6 hours earlier.

Are there times when you have conflict?
B: I hate fruit flies, and the leaving old food in one space for a couple of days, results in the coming of the fruit flies. However the leftover food is due to George coming round for visits, yet no one cleans up after him. Sharing a bathroom is sometimes a problem, as despite the fact I always flush the toilet, and in the event the toilet paper runs out Anuschka sometimes provides me with toilet paper under the door, when the toilet paper runs out, it’s very awkward. However that’s not amplified by the fact that she is a girl, I find that to always be awkward.

But surely living with as roommates of the opposite sex has advantages and disadvantages?
Overall the whole situation is positive. The room smells great, scented candles, perfume, etc, due to both of us trying to impress the other by keeping the place smelling excellent.

So what would be the main disadvantage then?
A: I don’t like that he sees me without making and sees me unprepared for the day.
B: The bathroom is an issue. I don’t need to elaborate, as I already have.

Do you regret living together as a couple?
When we became roommates we were merely friends, but developed into a couple by living together. Living together accelerated a process which could have occurred. We always spent a lot of time together prior to being a couple.

How do you find life as a freshman?
A: Personally I’m surprised by how much I like my major, and I really enjoy the people on campus. Also despite the differences between Berlin and Jacobs, the nightlife here is still fun.
B: I quickly had to get used to the fact that Jacobs is not Germany, and I wasn’t expecting it to be so far from it.

How about activities and life on campus; what exactly are you involved in?
A: I used to be a cheerleader but not anymore.
B: Rowing, play basketball, and part of BRIMUN.

Are there things about Jacobs you would change?
A: I would like to be closer to the city and go downtown more, I feel secluded a bit, but I don’t want to live off campus, just move the locations of Jacobs entirely.
B: Inside Jacobs my desire it to move to the second floor, because it’s more convenient in terms of distance to servery, common room, and QSA. Also I would like to have more time to go downtown during the week, and relax. Most importantly having döner on campus would fundamentally change my life.

How do you feel you have changed since coming to Jacobs?
A: I have really become used to being surrounded by people all the time, so now if I’m alone it is very strange.
B: I stopped caring anywhere as much. In the outside world you have to dress decent, do your hair, and have a respectable appearance. Now I feel I can go to class in pajamas. I also drink a lot more, especially by having a casual beer for lunch during the week, which I never used to do.

Who would you refer to as your favourite professor?
A: Jürgen Trabent- Conceptions of language, He is so clever and wise.
B: Chris Welzel- he is a professor of political science, but focuses on value change, and he is seriously awesome. Also his course is cool, and the professor actually inspires me to read.

Do you have a particular favourite food?
A: Good Avocados.
B: Döner, Pizza, Hamburgers, Schnitzels, any fast food.

How about your favourite color?
A: Yellow
B: Dark Blue

Can we infer from this that you will be moving out of CIII?
No. We love CIII more than any other college but unfortunately everyone else lives in Mercator so there is a chance we could relocate....this is undecided though.

What would be the best vacation you could think of?
Some deserted island, somewhere in the Caribbean with sun, rum, ocean, and music.

Future plans and dreams:
A: I want to continue with psychology, get a PHD, then move to some place that’s really hot and sunny, and just do research and have a1000 babies. Well maybe not 1000, but at least 4 when being more realistic.
B: I will also continue my studies, and hopefully end up being an ambassador of Germany again in a warm and stable country, preferably one that is prosperous. Should the ambassador plan fail, then running a bar on a beach would be fine.

How do you feel you will change in the future years at Jacobs?
A: I will study more, as I believe Ben is a good influence on me.
B: We plan on being roommates next year, and maybe do more extracurricular activities. I hope we can generally drink more in upcoming semesters.
